On February 23, 2024, the Center for Educational Quality Accreditation, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City in collaboration with the Vietnam Medical Education Association organized a workshop on “Contributing ideas to the development of a set of standards for quality accreditation of medical doctor training program” at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City (UMP).

The workshop was attended by nearly 100 delegates from: Ministry of Education and Training, Ministry of Health; Vietnam Association for Medical Education ; VNU-HCM; CEA-HCM; expert group developing medical standards; the Healthcare Professional Associations; Universities that train medical doctors; Hospitals; Students and Alumni of the Medical Doctor Training Program.
The workshop takes place in 1 day (February 23, 2024) with the main contents:
- Part 1: Opening the Workshop
- Part 2: Roundtable discussion: Quality accreditation of medical doctor training program in the context of international integration
- Part 3: Report: Principles of building a set of standards for quality accreditation of medical doctor training program
- Part 4: Divide into groups to discuss and give feedback on the standards
- Part 5: Present a summary of each group’s comments.
- Part 6: Summary of the Feedback Meeting and Next Steps.
Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Director of CEA-HCM, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Ngoc Quynh Lam, said that today’s workshop aims to gather many opinions from experts and scientists, especially with the presence of state management agencies on education and training, healthcare, medical education associations, healthcare professional associations, hospitals and learners to have more theoretical and practical bases to consolidate the viewpoints and solutions to build a set of standards for quality accreditation of medical doctor training program, meeting the goals of accrediting the quality of training programs, helping to ensure and improve the quality of medical doctor training and international integration, recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).

Implementing the Party and State’s policies and guidelines on improving quality, international integration, and new requirements in ensuring the quality of medical education in the world, CEA-HCM has closely coordinated with UMP, leading experts in the field of medical training at home and abroad, experts in ensuring and accrediting the quality of university education to research and implementing the project recognized by the WFME.
The results from the Workshop were a very valuable source of information for the CEA-HCM to have more theoretical and practical basis to consolidate the viewpoint and solutions to complete a set of standards for quality accreditation of medical doctor training program, meeting the goals of assessing the quality of training programs, helping to ensure and improve the quality of medical doctor training and international integration, recognized by the WFME.
In addition, this Workshop was also the first event of the CEA-HCM in a series of events towards the 30th Anniversary of the establishment and development of VNU-HCM.
One of the factors that created the motivation and contributed to the success of the Workshop was the support and close direction from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Training.
Following the speech of Associate Professor, Dr. Le Ngoc Quynh Lam; Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Long – Director, Department of Science, Technology and Training (Ministry of Health) also gave instructions to help guide the Workshop to take place effectively and successfully.

Attending the Workshop, there was Prof. Dr. Huynh Van Chuong – Director of the the Education Quality Management Agency (Ministry of Education and Training). Speaking at the opening ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huynh Van Chuong expressed his interest and support for CEA-HCM coordination with the Vietnam Association for Medical Education to organize a workshop to contribute ideas to the development of a set of standards for quality accreditation of medical training program. The workshop gathered experts from medical training institutions nationwide, so we hope that delegates and experts will thoroughly discuss the set of standards, clarify the necessity of the development as well as the principles and details of each standard for accreditation of medical training programs for Vietnam.

Many discussion opinions came from experts in the medical field with useful, practical information and multi-dimensional perspectives, contributing to the completion of the Quality Accreditation Standards for Medical Doctor Training Program according to WFME.
